How to Unlock Garmin Maps 2009

Garmin's line of GPS navigation units are built for use in a variety of locations, such as in a car, boat, airplane or while on foot. These GPS devices include detailed maps, turn-by-turn directions and additional tools such as media players and Bluetooth hands-free calling. It is possible to purchase updated maps, or maps for new locations, for your Garmin device. Once purchased, these maps must be unlocked before they may be used. Depending on the type of map product you have purchased, it can be unlocked with either a 25-character Unlock Code, or an eight-character Coupon Code.

Unlock Code

  Insert the new MapSource DVD into your computer's DVD drive. When the program opens, click "Utilities" and "Manage Map Products."

  Click the "Unlock Regions" tab, then "Add."

  Enter the 25-character Unlock Code. This code may be located on the DVD case, or on a yellow slip of paper. Click "OK" to unlock the map.

  Insert the MapSource DVD into your computer. When MapSource has opened, click "Utilities" and "Manage Map Products."

  Choose the map product you want to unlock from the list that appears. Click "Unlock Online." You are taken to the Unlock Maps web page.

  Install the Garmin Communicator Plugin, if you do not already have it installed on your computer. You are prompted to install the Plugin when the Unlock Maps page loads.

  Connect your Garmin GPS to the computer using a USB cable. Click "Find Devices" in the MapSource software, then choose your GPS from the list. Enter the device's serial number. This number is located on the GPS case.

  Enter the eight-character Coupon Code that is written on your Unlock Certificate, located inside the DVD case. Click "Unlock Map" to use the new map.
