How to Upgrade the Memory on an HP M9417C

The HP Pavilion Elite m9417c is a desktop computer with an AMD Phenom processor and 6 GB of memory. Although the Pavilion Elite m9417c has a large amount of RAM installed, it has a fourth memory slot that can accept an additional memory module. 64-bit operating systems can address large amounts of RAM; take advantage of that feature by increasing the memory in your desktop. By installing a fourth module, you can upgrade the memory in your computer to a maximum of 8 GB.
    • 1

Shut the Pavilion Elite m9417c down completely, and remove all of the cables from the front and back of the tower. Place the tower on its side so that the I/O ports on the back of the computer are face down, and the large air vent faces up.

Remove the large Phillips-head thumbscrew on the back of the Pavilion m9417c side cover. Place your hand under the raised metal lip and slide the cover back. Once you have moved the cover as far as possible, lift it straight up to remove it from the computer tower. You should now be able to see the computer motherboard, along with the memory slots.

    • 3

Lower the plastic retainers on the sides of the empty Pavilion m9417c memory slot, and hold the memory module over the slot so that the notch on the bottom points the same direction as the raised tab inside the memory slot.

    • 4

Push the memory module directly down into the empty slot until the plastic retainers rise up to lock the module in place.

    • 5

Place the cover back on the side of the Pavilion m9417c tower, and push it forward until the hole for the thumbscrew lines up with the back of the computer tower. Replace the thumbscrew.
