How to Use the Dremel Moto-Tool

The Dremel moto-tool, or rotary tool, is a remarkably versatile tool that accepts a myriad of tips to allow buffing, drilling, cutting, engraving, or just about anything a rotary motion can accomplish. These tips attach much like drill tips do, by exchanging tips dependent on the job at hand. Once the tip is attached, a quick flip of a switch and you are in business.

  Push the small button at the tip of the Dremel to lock the shaft in place. Fit the Dremel wrench over the collet nut and rotate counterclockwise when facing the tip of the shaft.

  Remove the existing attachment bit and replace with the one you wish to use.

  Tighten the collet nut by rotating the wrench clockwise until secure.

  Plug the Dremel into a grounded wall socket, if applicable. Some Dremels are cordless and will not require a plug.

  Hold the Dremel moto-tool in one of the grips recommended by Dremel. The pencil grip is like holding a pencil and is useful for detailed work. The paring knife grip, which is like holding a knife, offers smooth, long cuts with controlled depth. The golf grip is a sturdy, one- or two-handed grip, similar to that of a golf club, useful for tasks that might result in kickback.

  Slide the switch to the desired position to start the motor. Some models may offer multiple speeds and a reversal of rotation direction. Depending on the tool and task at hand, apply the tool as recommended in the Dremel instructions.
