How to Use Turn Signals in Tennessee

Turn signals are a sign to other drivers to inform them of where your car is going and to prevent accidents. Every state, including Tennessee, has different laws regarding the use of turn signals. In Tennessee, there are exceptions to the use of turn signals and indicators of when it's either legal or illegal to forget to turn on your turn signal.

Turn on the turn signal at every right or left turn. Tennessee doesn't make exceptions for using your turn signal when making turns. Signals are necessary for any turn throughout the state. If your turn signal isn't working, use hand signals when turning.

Turn on signals to change lanes when there's oncoming traffic or if the lane change can impede traffic. If moving to the right lane, turn on the right signal; if moving to the left lane, turn on the left signal.

Use personal judgment or preference when traffic isn't impeded during lane changes. In the state of Tennessee, it's legal to change lanes without a turn signal when there are no other cars in the lane or if other cars aren't affected by the lane change.
