How to Warm Up Turbos

Turbos are aftermarket upgrades for cars that improve their engine's power. They function with the car's exhaust--harnessing each exhaust stroke's product and using it to turn a fan, which in turn moves more air into the engine. This extra air makes each explosion more powerful, which makes the car both faster and more efficient.

A key point about turbos is that the drive must warm them up, since they require exhaust in order to function. Warming the engine up by idling it will create this exhaust and in turn run the turbo.

Turn the car on but do not press the accelerator.

Allow the engine to idle in neutral for 30 to 60 seconds. Allow more time if it is cold outside: be as liberal as possible with your time.

Rev the engine when you're ready to start moving. Do not rev the engine before that moment: there may not yet be oil in the turbo, and if you rev it, it must move without oil (thus rubbing metal on metal and adding to wear and tear).
