How to Wire a Rudd Hot Water Heater Thermostat

Rudd electric water heater thermostats connect in several configurations depending on whether they are residential, commercial, single element or dual element. The process for wiring a Rudd water heater dual thermostat for ordinary household use is fairly straightforward. Always shut off the power supply before you begin working on an electric appliance.

      Connect the red incoming power supply wire to the upper left thermostat post with a Phillips screwdriver. Loosen the screw counterclockwise. Strip 1/4 inch of insulation from the end of the wire with a wire-stripping tool. Insert 1/4 inch of bare wire under the screw and tighten it clockwise.

      Connect the black incoming power supply wire to the upper right post of the upper thermostat with a Phillips screwdriver. Loosen the screw counterclockwise. Insert 1/4 inch of bare wire under the screw and tighten it clockwise. The main electrical power is now connected to your Rudd water heater thermostat.

      Run the first lead wire from the second screw down on the right side of the top thermostat to the right side of the lower heating element.

      Connect the second wire from the second screw down on the left side of the top thermostat to the left screw on the top heating element.

      Connect the third wire from the second screw on the right side of the top thermostat to the right side of the top heating element.

      Run the fourth wire from the third screw down on the right side of the top thermostat to the top left screw of the lower thermostat.

      Connect the fifth wire from the second screw down on the bottom thermostat to the left screw on the lower heating element.

      Fill your Rudd electric water heater with water until it flows evenly from all faucets.

      Turn on the main electrical power supply to the water heater at the main breaker panel or fuse box.

      Adjust the thermostat temperature settings according to your unit's manufacturer's instructions. Wait at least two hours and test the water temperature with a cooking thermometer; adjust the temperature settings as needed.
