How to Write Dollar and Coin Amounts

In the age of electronic banking, payments and transfers, it seems very old-school to have to write a check manually. However, there are times when you may need to write a check.
  • Dollars

    • 1

Write out the words for the dollar amount. For example, Twenty-five, for 25.

    • 2

Write "and" after the words for the dollar amount. For example, Twenty-five and.

    • 3

Write the cents, or coin amount, as numerals. Add a back slash and 100 after the "and." For example, Twenty-five and 35/100. If there are no coin amounts, do not write anything to represent the coins.

    • 4

Add the word dollars after the numerals for the coin amount. For example, Twenty-five and 35/100 dollars.

    $

    • 1

Use the dollar sign--$--as the first symbol.

    • 2

Write out the dollar amount in words and the coin amount as a numeral next to /100.

    • 3

Eliminate the word dollars at the end. For example, $25.35 would be $ Twenty-five and 35/100.
