Cost

Both Dell and HP have home computers that are cost effective, with both of the brands having their lowest priced computer at $299, as of 2010. For HP this is the Pavilion p6600z Series desktop and for Dell it is the Inspiron 570.
Performance

There is a selection of high performance machines available from both HP and Dell. Dell has a line of computers known as the Dell Studio XPS series which feature a range of high performance specifications, including the capacity to store 4TB of data. HP's Pavilion Elite series have a similar range of specifications, although its storage capacity is not as high as the Dell Studio.
Design

A deciding factor in many purchases is the overall look of the computer. HP keep things simple with a sleek black finish on almost all of its machines. Dell has a range of finishes; many of its models are available in bold, bright colors.
