HVAC Electrical Training

Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) electrical technicians repair, install and maintain everything from heating units and air conditioners to refrigerators and ventilation systems. They perform these tasks for businesses and individual homes, and their training comes in a variety of forms.
  • Education

    • HVAC electrical technicians typically need training from a postsecondary institution -- either a trade school or community college. These schools instruct aspiring technicians in aspects of the job related to temperature control and installation. They also train them on the tools needed for the trade. Such programs usually take from several months to a year or more to complete, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

    Licensure

    • Some states require HVAC electrical technicians to possess a license, which provides evidence the technician understands the basics of the industry. Licensure can be obtained through a variety of organizations. Aspiring technicians often have to pay a registration fee to apply for a license, then pass an examination.

    Apprenticeships

    • Apprenticeships consist of hands-on training (and occasional classroom work) and often provide HVAC electrical technicians with the bulk of their training. Technicians who serve apprenticeships learn under the guidance of an experienced worker or supervisor.
