Ideas for Romantic Anniversary Cards

  Anniversaries not only mark the amount of time that you have spent with your significant other, but they also prompt us to reflect on and appreciate our lives together. Whether you are part of a young couple celebrating your first anniversary or an older couple marking your 50th anniversary, memories are a key component in a romantic anniversary card.

Symbol

  Show a traditional symbol for the anniversary year on the front of the card. Anniversaries, such as the first year, fifth year and fifteenth year, often have materials such as wood or silver and specific gifts such as linens associated with them. The exact traditional gift for a given anniversary varies by country and culture.

  If your loved one isn't much for tradition and appreciates humor, put a photo of a traditional but undesirable gift on the front -- especially if it is a less-than-romantic material such as wood -- and write inside "The traditional gift for our anniversary year is wood. I thought you might like a trip to Hawaii instead."

Years Together

• Adorn the front of the card with the number of years you have spent together. Fill the inside with sentiments reflecting on that number. For example, if you've been together 22 years, make a list of 22 reasons you love him, 22 things he does that make you smile, or 22 silly, serious and sweet moments in your relationship.

Memory Poem

  Pen a poem inside the card that describes and reflects on one of the sweetest or most significant life experiences you have shared with your sweetheart. Subjects could include your wedding day, the birth of a child, your first date, your first kiss, or simply a memory that stands out in your mind.

  Avoid writer's block by writing a first draft, returning to the phrase "I remember" whenever you start to fumble. Try to include all five senses and lots of details. Honesty, genuine detail and even humor trump over-the-top prose every time. ("I remember making you sneeze uncontrollably on our first date / By bringing you a bouquet of daisies / I didn't know you are allergic.")
