Interior & Exterior Decorating

If you've just moved into a new home, you may have a few ideas in mind for decorating the inside of the house. However, exterior decorations are just as important when it comes to creating a home that matches your tastes and preferences; using interior and exterior decorations to complement one another can make your home especially welcoming.
  • Size

    • If you want to use matching decorations for the inside and outside of your home, it's usually best to adorn the home exterior with the larger version of the item. For instance, if you're going for an Old World feel and are using wrought iron candleholders, you can install sconces on the walls in the foyer, and use giant standing variations of the candleholders to decorate your porch.

    Color

    • Using the same color scheme for the interior and exterior of your home will create a consistent design scheme that is appealing to the eye. If the brick of your home is a neutral color like brown or beige, painting the front door chocolate brown and adorning the front of the home with light green plants can make the home more attractive. To bring this color palette into the home, you could paint the walls in the same rich brown as the front door, and feature synthetic versions of the plants inside decorative pots.

    Considerations

    • Using personalized decorations for the home's interior and exterior is a great idea as well. For instance, you can hang a large wooden or metal letter on the outside of your home to represent your family name; a smaller version of the letter can be featured in the living room, along with small letters that stand for the first initial of each family member.
