Is Becoming a Firefighter Hard?

Though being a firefighter might seem glamorous, a lot of work and dedication is required. Before becoming employed as a firefighter, an applicant must successfully pass a number of physical screenings and complete an extensive training course.
  • Physical Requirements

    • Firefighters are typically required to pass an extensive series of physical tests. For example, the Los Angeles County Fire Department requires applicants to meet certain vision and hearing standards, as well as have the ability to pass a physical course that includes stair climbing and carrying equipment.

    Educational Requirements

    • Educational requirements for becoming a firefighter vary, but almost all departments require a high school diploma or equivalent. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, obtaining a two- or four-year college degree in fire science can increase an applicant's chance of success. Fire departments often test applicants on basic English, math and job-specific skills.

    Firefighter Training

    • Newly hired firefighters are often sent to training classes that may be offered by the local fire department or at colleges and technical schools. Further training will be required on an ongoing basis by departments. Some firefighters will be required to become certified as emergency medical technicians (EMT) or paramedics.
