Is it Normal to Have Three Periods in One Month?

Menstruation usually occurs every 21 to 35 days, according to the Mayo Clinic. If you have three menstrual periods in a month, you are likely experiencing vaginal bleeding from another cause. Vaginal bleeding that occurs outside of menstruation is called "abnormal vaginal bleeding."
  • Causes

    • Abnormal vaginal bleeding may be caused by birth control pills or other medications, pelvic inflammatory disease, an intrauterine device, uterine fibroids or an infection of any pelvic organs. Cancer, diabetes and extreme stress cause abnormal vaginal bleeding in rare cases.

    Pregnancy

    • Heavy bleeding during pregnancy may indicate an ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage or placental problems. Although light spotting may be normal, visit your doctor if you are pregnant and experience vaginal bleeding.

    Warning

    • Contact your doctor if you experience abnormal vaginal bleeding. Although some causes of abnormal vaginal bleeding are not serious, bleeding may indicate gynecological or medical problems.
