A List of Foods Containing Sudan Red

      Sudan Red is also known as solvent yellow 24 and is an industrial, oil-soluble, red dye that is used to color a variety of nonfood products like solvents, oil, shoe and floor polishes and waxes. However, the dye caused quite a crisis in 2005 after it was reported that it found its way into food products like chili powder, and traces of it have been found in sauces and spice blends.

    Robertson's Products

    • Robertson's Peri Peri Spice was a product that was reported to have Sudan Red in it. Robertson's also withdrew its Flavaz Piquant Peri Peri, Louisiana Cajun, Portuguese Chicken, Gold and Crispy Peri Peri, Knorrox Chakalaka Cube, Knorr two-L Food Solutions Curry Sauce and Knorr two-L Solutions Peri Peri. The company also withdrew Crispa Coatings Spicy Cajun and Papmix Hot Chakalaka, Peri Peri Aromat and Robertsons 1 kg Food Solutions Cajun Spice from the shelves after the crisis.

    All Natural Palm Oil

    • All Natural Palm oil brand is a product suspected of containing the dangerous ingredient Sudan Red. The 720 mL bottle, the 0.5 L bottle, the 1 L bottle and the 1062 mL bottle are all products withdrawn from supermarket shelves because they were thought to have contained the dye Sudan Red.

    The Dragon Brand and O'Kane Food Services Products

    • The Dragon Brand and O'Kane Food Services have products that were thought to have contained the chemical dye Sudan Red. Those products include Dragon Brand Curry Sauce (200 kg), Dragon Brand Curry Sauce (5 kg) and O'Kane Food Service Curry Sauce (4.5 kg). The products contain chili powder imported from India, and it was reported that the products were issued a food hazard warning by the Food Standards Agency in the United Kingdom.

    Martin Food Products

    • Martin Foods has several products containing the chemical Sudan Red, which include Favourit Madras Curry Powder (50 g), Favourit Chili Powder (50 g), Favourit Mild Curry Powder (50 g), Favourit Vindaloo Hot Curry Powder (50 g), Favourit Cajun Seasoning (40 g), Favourit Quality Fine Ground Hot Chili Powder (500 g) and Favourit Madras Curry Powder (Aromatic, Spicy and Hot, 500 g). Other sizes of these products were also contaminated with Sudan Red.

    Green Cuisine Food Products

    • Green Cuisine Food Products, such as Green Cuisine Brand Cayenne Pepper and Green Cuisine Brand Chili Powder are contaminated with the chemical dye Red Sudan, according to the Food Standards Agency in the United Kingdom. Other foods contaminated include Green Cuisine Brand Ground Chillies and Green Cuisine Brand Hot Curry Powder. The products sold in 50 g boxes and 60 g jars were the products tainted by Sudan Red.
