House plants not only provide an attractive look to your home, but can also help with air quality and create a green environment. However, if you have a small home or apartment, you may not want a plant that will take over the space and need re-potting every month. Smaller house plants can fit into nooks and crannies throughout your home, such as a not-quite-full bookshelf, or a small bedside vanity. Even tiny apartment bathrooms have room for a 4-inch potted plant to squeeze into the decor.

    Money Tree Plant

    • The money tree plant is considered a lucky plant to have in the home: in Chinese tradition, it brings good fortune and money to those that own one. It can usually be purchased in a 4-inch pot and will not outgrow it too quickly. This plant needs extremely well-draining soil, without moss or organic material that holds onto the water. Over-watering causes the leaves to fall off or the roots to rot. Keep your money tree in a spot with partial sun (not more than four hours a day) and partial shade --- they do not like being overheated.

African violets are a small houseplant that will brighten your home with its blooms. It has round, furry leaves that turn brown when wet, so be careful when watering your plant. An effective way to water your violet, as well as keep its humidity level up, is to place the pot in a pan of rocks and water to let it drink from below. These houseplants don't require a lot of sun, and do well in a window facing east or west.

Peace lilies, or Spathiphyllum, not only have beautiful blooms but also grow attractive foliage which makes it an aesthetically pleasing, year-round houseplant. This plant originates from deep jungles, which means it requires extremely low levels of light. Peace lilies need to be watered often, and will tell you when it's thirsty by drooping its leaves. This plant also improvement the air quality in your home by removing toxins.

    Jade Plant

    • With its thick shiny leaves, small jade plants make an attractive addition to any room. It needs bright light to thrive. A great plant for the busy person, jades don't need a lot of water or care. Wrinkled leaves are a sign that its roots are dry and it needs a drink. To keep your jade small, clip back the stem or new branches and only re-pot in the same sized container.
