MacDill Air Force Base is located in Tampa, Florida, on 5,767 acres of land, 906 of which are wetlands. There are approximately 12,000 military and 1,300 civilian personnel assigned to MacDill Air Force Base. MacDill also offers civilians the opportunity to take classes at the base. In order to park and drive a vehicle on base it is necessary to obtain a security pass. This pass is also used at security checkpoints throughout the base. A vehicle operator must also have a valid driver's license, registration and proof of insurance. Any time your vehicle is on base it is subject to search at the discretion of base officers.
Background Check

To obtain a security pass card you must have a background check done through MacDill. The background check will investigate your criminal history. MacDill Air Force Base reserves the right to refuse entry to anyone deemed a security risk to the facilities. The background check process may take up to three weeks. The background check stays valid for five years. If you are a student at MacDill you must obtain a new security pass at the beginning of each semester.
Driver's License and Registration

You must show proof of current driver's license and registration before your security pass will be issued. You should also keep your driver's license and registration with you as a MacDill officer can request them any time you enter the gate. Thirty days after becoming a permanent resident of MacDill Air Force Base you must obtain a Florida driver's license. A Florida License on Wheels mobile licensing unit is on base at least once a month to issue driver's licenses to out-of-state residents. You must have two forms of identification and take a vision test to receive a license.
Obey Base Laws

To retain your pass you must follow all local, state and base laws for operating a motor vehicle. It is prohibited to use cell phones and/or text while operating a vehicle on base. The speed limit for MacDill AFB is 25 mph unless otherwise posted. Traffic violations on MacDill may be considered state violations. Traffic violations can also jeopardize your access to the base. MacDill AFB has many one-way streets. Be alert for changes in traffic. There are also many pedestrians on base. Be alert for pedestrians in intersections. There are also many areas on base that are restricted access. Look out for signs that indicate these areas. Trespassing in a restricted access area is a security violation and can result in prosecution.
