Minnesota Tree Diseases & Pests

Minnesota is divided into four biomes: Northwest and Central, Southeast, Southwest and Northern Tallgrass Prairie. The variation of the biomes often dictates the variations of disease and pests. Still, many pests and diseases are common across the state.

  • Aphids

    • Aphids are common amongst most deciduous trees and shrubs throughout Minnesota. These insects feed on the leaves, stems and buds of trees. The honeydew that is left behind from aphid feeding can cause the tree to develop sooty mold disease.

    Emerald Ash Borer

    • The emerald ash borer is a destructive Minnesota pest that specifically targets ash trees. The most common ash trees in Minnesota include the green, black and white ash trees. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture reports that each of these variations is susceptible to this borer.

    Diseases

    • There are several fungal and bacterial diseases that are common amongst Minnesota trees. These diseases include mild and treatable diseases such as anthracnose, bacterial spot and powdery mildew, as well as more serious, if not fatal diseases, such as heart rot, verticillium wilt and Dutch elm disease.

    Treatment

    • A regular maintenance schedule that includes good fertilization and irrigation practices, regular pruning and scheduled fungicidal treatments help to reduce, if not eliminate, the potential of tree infections. The University of Minnesota Extension Regional and County Extension Offices provide diagnosis and treatment assistance.
