Murray Lawn Mower Maintenance

Maintaining your Murray lawn mower will ensure that your equipment will last for many years to come. Just perform a few maintenance chores regularly to make sure that your Murray stays in top condition.
  • After You Mow

    • Part of regular maintenance is caring for your mower after each use. Allow the engine to cool down, remove the spark plug connector, then spray the underneath of the deck with a garden hose. This will remove the grass clippings and debris and will keep your underside from accumulating gunk. Having this done will ensure proper mowing and mulching the next time you mow.

    Blades

    • You should check your mower blade at least once a month. A dull or bent blade is not only bad for your mower but also for your lawn. Torn grass and poor grass mulching from a dull blade can invite lawn disease. A dull blade will also make the mower work harder cutting your grass. Inspect your blade and sharpen it as needed. If the blade needs to be replaced, make sure the new one is designed for your Murray mower.

    Lubricate

    • Lubricate the wheels and the pivot points every 25 hours of service--which, for many users, is about one lawn-mowing season. Use engine oil and apply a few drops to these areas to keep them moving freely and prevent them from binding. Do not lubricate the safety-stop cable though. Doing so may damage the cable and prevent it from stopping the engine.

Change the crankcase oil at least every two years . Check it periodically during the mowing season. To change the oil, remove the oil plug and drain into a metal receptacle (this job can be messy, so spread newspapers underneath the mower). Dispose of the used oil properly and replace to the fill line with new four cycle engine oil of the recommended grade and viscosity.

    Air filter

    • Check the air filter. You can clean the foam type by washing it with hot water and dish soap. After it is cleaned, squeeze it dry and add some engine oil to it. Squeeze to distribute the oil and put it back in the mower. If you have a paper filter or the foam is damaged, replace the filter.

    Spark plug

    • Replace the spark plug every two years. Make sure that you get the spark plug recommended for your mower. To remove the old one, slip off the connector and remove the plug with a socket wrench. When you put a new one in, hand tighten and then tighten it with the socket wrench. Do not over-tighten as that may damage the spark plug or the cylinder head.
