Nasi goreng is a popular rice dish from Indonesia. It can be eaten as a main meal or as a side dish. The recipe uses rice, oil, eggs and a mix of spices. The spice mixes used in nasi goreng vary somewhat from recipe to recipe. Some mixtures are more complicated than others.

    Simple Nasi Spice Mix

    • The simplest version of nasi goreng spice mix is simply sugar, salt and garlic. The mix should be according to taste, but generally it is about a tablespoon of sugar, a teaspoon of salt and half a clove of garlic.

    Garlic Nasi Spice Mix

    • Some chefs like to add extra garlic flavor to nasi goreng. This can be achieved with fresh garlic or with garlic powder. Many recipes call for an entire clove of garlic.

    Spicy Nasi Mix

    • A spicier version of the nasi goreng spice mix includes chili peppers and chili powder, as well as the typical sugar, salt and garlic. The spicier ingredients can be added in any amount to make the dish as hot as the chef wants.

    Ginger

    • Fresh ginger is often added to give the rice dish a unique flavor. Add ginger sparingly.
