  The Nikon Coolpix 4600 compact digital camera offers users a basic camera for shooting pictures and videos. The lightweight camera is designed for beginners with features such as a blur warning, red-eye reduction technology and 16 scene-assist modes to optimize the exposure settings for nearly any environment. The 4600 does not have a manual mode and will not be able to perform well in low-light situations.

The Camera

• The Coolpix 4600 is a pocket-sized camera at 3.3 inches wide, 2.4 inches tall and 1.4 inches deep. It weighs, without batteries, about 4.6 ounces. The backside contains a 1.8-inch LCD monitor.

  It is packaged with a wrist strap but no case or SD card on which to store pictures.

  The camera runs on two standard AA batteries, which should last for about 230 images. Switching to EN-MH1 rechargeable batteries will boost performance to about 360 frames. The image processor can handle about 1.3 frames per second and shoot 16 consecutive frames before pausing.

Pictures

• With 16 shooting modes plus a Best Shot Selector, the camera is fully automatic. Scene-assist modes include the traditional portrait and sports selections, as well as some to hone the settings to even more specific needs such as party/indoor, museum and fireworks show.

  The Coolpix 4600 has a 3x optical zoom, plus a 4x digital zoom, which translates to a 34mm to 102mm zoom lens with an aperture of f/2.9 to f/4.9. The camera will produce a maximum 4 megapixel image, large enough to produce a quality 8 by 10-inch print.

  The flash will light a range from 1.3 to 11 feet. It is also fully automatic and can be set to auto, red-eye reduction and slow sync. It comes with the Nikon D-Lighting system designed to keep the flash from blowing out the highlights and shadows of an image.

Video

• The Coolpix 4600 will shoot basic video, but it does not include audio. It produces Quicktime video files at a maximum six of 640x480.
