Online Interpreter Certification

While there is no universal certification required for interpreters in the U.S., pursuing certification can provide a competitive advantage when seeking employment or career advancement. Some interpreter certifications can be completed via the Internet.
  • Types

    • Interpreters work in different specialty areas. Legal interpreters provide assistance in court and at proceedings such as depositions and attorney-client meetings. Medical interpreters work in hospitals and health care clinics, helping staff communicate diagnoses and treatment plans to patients. Conference interpreters frequently work in international business and may need to translate two languages into English. Guide interpreters accompany travelers abroad.

    Features

    • Online interpreter certification programs demonstrate an individual's knowledge of a foreign language and terminology specific to the field in which they work. For example, the curriculum for an online medical interpreter certification program might include anatomy and physiology, and ethics and standards for medical interpreters.

    Potential

    • The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) notes that employment for interpreters is expected to grow by about 22 percent from 2008 to 2018. Job prospects are especially good for interpreters of Spanish and interpreters in the legal and health care industries. As of May 2008, interpreters earned a median wage of $38,350, although the BLS states that this rate varies depending on industry and whether an interpreter is certified.
