Order of Installation Services for Pastors

When a pastor takes over the leadership of a congregation, the church usually plans a special ceremony, called an installation service, to celebrate. Although the specifics may vary among different congregations, key elements remain the same.
  • Praise

    • Music plays a significant role in the service. Congregations sing songs, either from a hymnal or liturgical book, or songs of contemporary worship. Some denominations may provide special music or a soloist.

    Charge to Pastor

    • A moderator, board member, elder or other member of the church or denomination provides a charge to the pastor as a reminder of his responsibilities. This can include the reading of Scripture passages that concern those responsibilities.

    Sermon

    • The moderator gives a sermon, often based on the Scripture passages read. Usually the sermon relates to the duties of a pastor as she fulfills her responsibilities.

    Congregation

    • The congregation offers words of encouragement to the new pastor. These can include Bible or inspirational verses, personal stories or general words of support.

    Prayer

    • The installation service concludes with a closing prayer, usually led by the new pastor.
