Problems With Minn Kota Trolling

    • Minn Kota trolling motors are everywhere in recreational boating. For more than 75 years, the company has produced a varied line of trolling motors. They range from inexpensive, low-power models that easily propel an inflatable dinghy, to large, powerful trolling motors that offer precise steering and powerful drive through rough water. Trolling motors are relatively fragile items, especially compared to regular outboard motors. Minn Kota trolling motors are susceptible to currents and underwater obstacles, as well as the general wear and tear from the constant up and down a trolling motor sees.

    Low Power

    • Minn Kota trolling motors are battery powered and the charge of your battery will make a huge difference in your motor's performance. If you notice your trolling motor is not performing as you expect, make sure your battery is fully charged. Some loss of power is expected as you drain your source. You can conserve battery life somewhat by trolling efficiently, using currents to your advantage, and using the "forward" setting more often than "reverse."

    Design and Durability

    • Some boaters complain that Minn Kota trolling motor cables are short, limiting the distance between the motor and the battery. If you want to keep your battery in the center or front of your boat, for example, you will need to rewire your Minn Kota to reach. Otherwise the battery must sit close to the motor, which can be inconvenient for driving in some boats.

The strength of the plastic parts that allow the motor to be raised, lowered, and locked in place is another problem Minn Kota owners face. These clamps and handles can break easily with repeated use. Although your trolling motor will continue to work, it can be an uncomfortable process to push and turn the metal screws directly.

    Longevity

    • Minn Kota trolling motors can take a minor beating but with constant use and aggressive trolling through marshy waters some speeds and functions can meet an early demise. The standard warranty on Minn Kota trolling motors lasts two years and covers defective parts only. It does not cover trolling motors used in saltwater or in commercial ventures.

Minn Kota handles repairs and warranty claims directly, so do not return a trolling motor you suspect to be defective to your retailer. Some retailers, such as Cabela's, will work with you to replace trolling motors that appear defective soon after purchase.
