Prune and Apple Jam

Apple-prune jam combines the tartness of apples with the intense, concentrated sweetness of prunes. Both fruits are good sources of dietary fiber, and have been shown to be effective in preventing the buildup of cholesterol in the blood.
  • Recipe

    • Spiced apple-prune jam can be made using Granny Smith apples, a popular tart green variety available year-round, and pitted dried prunes that are readily available in most supermarkets. The jam is even appropriate for diabetics, according to All Diabetic Recipes.

    Method

    • Recipe ingredients, which include cinnamon and allspice, are cooked about 15 minutes until they reach a thick consistency. Apples contain a natural pectin, which helps them gel. The jam can be stored in jars in the refrigerator for up to three weeks.

    Nutritional Information

    • Apples contain moderate amounts of some important nutrients, including vitamin A and potassium. A quarter of a cup of prunes supplies 16 percent of the adult daily value of vitamin A and 9 percent of the daily value of potassium.
