  A server is a device that provides services to other programs or computers. A remote server is a server that you connect to from your local computer or network, which is done via a network or Internet connection. You do not need to be physically attached to the server to access its services and functions. Remote server administration tools help you monitor and maintain this remote server.

RSAT

• The Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) for Windows 7 is a set of add-on tools for the management of features and roles, These roles and functions are located on servers using one of the following Window Server operating systems: Windows Server 2003, Server 2008 and Server 2008 R2. This tool is for IT administrators who must use a computer running Windows 7. The RSAT Observe It add-on allows you to capture an end-users session, including seeing information about computer usage, which you can start capturing as soon as the user logs on. The capture session will end when the user logs off. These tools are compatible with both 32- and 64-bit systems, but RSAT toolbox only works for Windows 7. Server Admin Tools 10.5.7

• There are nine tools within this set of admin tools for the Apple Server using the Mac Operating System X Server operating system. The Server Assistant application allows you to run Xserve systems even if you do not have a monitor attached to the server, and it helps you monitor and maintain remote servers. The Workgroup Manager tool allows you to keep track of groups, computer accounts and end-users on remote systems. The Server Monitor tool allows you to manage Xserve systems while the Server Admin tool allows you to monitor standard servers. iTivity

• iTivity is for the Linux operating system, which can access your remote server using the Internet. This tool helps you diagnose and fix server problems even if you are dialing into it from your local computer. This program uses a graphical user interface, which means that you can run commands and applications using radio buttons, wizards or checkboxes as opposed to writing code or programs. Other features of this tool include the ability to share screens and use remote desktops. There is a shareware version of this program, which means that you can use it for free for a limited time period. You must, however, purchase the full version when the trial period ends, but you must contact the company for a product quote.
