Rover 4.6 Engine Specifications

    • Land Rover has produced several V-8s through its storied lifetime and each of those engines was referred to as "Rover V-8." Within this family of engines is the Rover 4.6-liter. This V-8 engine was used in two vehicles throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s: The first was the 1996 through 2002 Land Rover Range Rover HSE, and the later -- and last -- model to use the Rover 4.6 was the 2003 and 2004 Land Rover Discovery.

    Horsepower

    • The Rover 4.6 underwent several changes throughout the years, which led to some changes in horsepower (hp) output. From 1996 through 1998, the 4.6-liter produced 225 hp at 4800 rpm. The 1999 model year saw two versions of the Rover 4.6: The base 4.6-liter delivered 222 hp at 4,750 rpm, while the Callaway special edition offered 240 hp at 4,750 rpm. The Rover V-8 produced 222 hp at 4,750 rpm from 2000 through 2002. In its last two years, 2003 and 2004, the Rover V-8 saw a decrease to 217 hp at 4,750 rpm.

    Torque

    • As with the horsepower, the minor engine changes through the life of this engine led to variances in the torque output. From 1996 though 1998, the Rover V-8 produced 286 foot-pounds of torque at 3,500 rpm. In 1999, the base V-8 delivered 300 foot-pounds of torque at 2,600 rpm, while the Callaway edition figures were 280 foot-pounds of torque at 4,000 rpm. This engine produced 300 foot-pounds of torque at 2,600 rpm from 2000 through 2004.

    Internals

    • From 1996 through 1998, the Rover V-8 had a bore -- cylinder width -- of 3.55 inches and a stroke -- piston travel inside the cylinder -- of 3.54 inches. In 1999, the Callaway 4.6-liter edition remained the same with a 3.55-inch bore and 3.54-inch stroke, but the base engine changed to a 3.70-inch bore x 3.20-inch stroke. From 2000 through 2002, the Rover V-8 retained the 3.70-inch bore x 3.20-inch stroke. From 2003 through 2004 the engine was changed again, with the bore holding at 3.70 inches, but with the stroke increased to 3.23 inches. The compression ratio of this engine was 9.0:1 from 1996 through 1998 and 9.4:1 from 1999 through 2004.

    Configuration

    • This engine had 16 valves, which means each cylinder had two valves to itself. From 1996 through 1998, as well as with the Callaway edition in 1999, this engine was a single-overhead-cam (SOHC) configuration. But starting with the base 1999 model through 2004, this engine came with an overhead-valve (OHV) configuration.

    Economy

    • This engine got 12 miles per gallon (mpg) in the city and 16 mpg on the highway from 1996 through 1998, figures matched by the Callaway edition in 1999. The base 1999 model delivered 13 mpg in the city and 16 mpg on the highway. From 2000 through 2002 the figures were 12 mpg in the city and 15 mpg on the highway, and from 2003 to 2004, the Rover 4.6 mpg figures were 12 in the city and 16 on the highway.
