SAE J1453 Specifications

    • The Society of Automobile Engineers (SAE) is an international association comprised of engineers, scientists and experts in other industries such as government and aerospace. Among its functions, the association sets engineering standards for products, promotes vehicle safety and provides engineering related education through public awareness programs. The J1453 is an O Ring Face (ORF) seal made of rubber. It is designed for use in hydraulic systems, industrial equipment and other commercial products to provide a leak proof seal to 6000 pounds per square inch from fluids and oil.

    Usage

    • Specifications for usage of the J1453 ORF seal depend on the type, which is based on its composition. A type CH is classified as suited for high temperature. Type HK is also heat resistant, although fluorocarbon is one if its components. The usage specifications for type CH include petroleum based fluids with a composition of nitrile elastomer and a durometer hardness of 90 with a five-point spread. The usage for type HK includes petroleum as well as non petroleum based fluids. HK type is rated at the same durometer hardness. A durometer is a gauge that measures the hardness and density of materials and substances.

    General Service and Tensile

    • Type CH is used in high pressure applications of oils, gasoline lubricating oil, pneumatics and water based hydraulic fluids. Type HK is appropriate for high pressure and high temperature service which involve the same materials. Both types have a tensile rating of 10 MPa minimum.

    Temperature and Elongation

    • The temperature range for type CH is -30 degrees F to 250 degrees F. Type HK has a temperature range of 5 degrees F to 525 degrees F. The elongation for both types is 100 percent.

    Lubrication

    • SAE J1453 O-rings must be coated with fluid or petrolatum before assembly. This process will provide easier installation.
