Sand
-
The sand inside the Triton filter loses efficiency after a few years of use. The #20 silica sand is coarse and capable of removing dirt particles 50 microns in size, but as the sand ages and becomes overused, it can only capture dirt particles 20 to 25 microns in size.
Sand Removal
-
On the bottom of the Pentair Triton TR 50 pool filter is a sand drain. When the drain cap is removed, the water inside the pump flows out along with some of the sand. The remainder of the sand is removed by removing the multiport handle from the top of the pump and using a garden hose to flush the rest of the sand out of the drain.
Using a Vacuum
-
Instead of flushing the pump with a garden hose, a wet and dry vacuum can be used to suck the sand out of the pool pump from the top after the multiport valve is removed. This method contains the sand instead of allowing it to cover the ground surrounding the Pentair Triton TR 50 pump.
