The steering gear is a very complex mechanical component. Because it operates every time you drive, there are several things that will instantly get your attention if it malfunctions. Paying attention to how your car handles is essential to noticing the signs of a bad steering box.
Noise
-
Take your car for a long drive and listen to it each time you take a turn, even if it's just a small, round bend. If you hear any popping or grounding sounds, there is a good chance the steering system, including the box, could have a serious problem. Compare the sound of your steering system to that of a friend's car if you're unsure as to whether the sounds you are hearing are unusual.
Heat
-
A typical steering gear can get 100 degrees hotter than the surrounding ambient temperatures. On a hot day, it can easily hit 200 degrees. If you experience difficulty steering, check the steering box for cracks and fluid leaks because of heat wear. Be careful not to allow any exposed skin to touch the steering box as it could be extremely hot.
Steering Shaft Test
-
Turn the steering shaft slightly with your hand right above the steering box. If you notice any free play in the steering shaft, and if the pitman doesn't move immediately when you turn the steering shaft, the steering box needs to be repaired or replaced.
