Snow Tire Tools

    • Snow tires and other tools for navigating snow- and ice-covered roads are required in many parts of the country. Oregon Live reports the 2010 studded snow tire season started in Oregon on November 1. Cars traveling in areas with heavy snowfall are required to carry tire chains or to have studded tires. In areas where special snow tires are not required, other products are available to help provide traction in snowy conditions.

    Studded Tires

    • Winter tires can be outfitted with small metal studs to increase the friction between the tire and the road. The extremely hard studs protrude slightly from the tire and are designed to fall back into the tire even as the tire tread wears down to maintain traction for the vehicle. The studs are controversial due to the pavement damage associated with their use.

    Tire Chains

    • Tire chains can be added to tires in severe winter driving conditions. They provide excellent traction but should only be used in extreme conditions as they are not designed for use when driving over 30 miles per hour. To work properly tire chains must fit securely to the tire. Pre-fitting the chains to the tires is recommended prior to use in winter weather.

    Alternatives

    • Products have been developed as alternatives to studded tires and chains. Some, like the Spikes-Spider and the Go Claw, are purported to be easier to use than chains and do not damage the road surface. Others, like the Autosock, fit over the tire for use on snowy roads but should be removed immediately after encountering a dry surface so they do not get ruined.
