The HP Compaq Business Desktop dc5000 is an Intel processor-based computer designed to run the Windows operating system. A small form factor variant, the dc5000 is much smaller than a traditional desktop or tower. The system can be placed horizontally, perhaps with a monitor sitting on top of its case, or vertically, like a traditional tower computer.
Dimensions
-
While the dc5000's weight can vary from the manufacturer's specification of 22.2 pounds depending on how it is equipped, its external dimensions remain the same. When laying flat, it is 3.95 inches tall, 13.3 inches wide and 15.1 inches deep. If it is vertical in its stand, it is 14.4 inches tall, 3.95 inches wide and 15.1 inches deep.
Operating System
-
Although HP recommends Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Home is also available as a pre-installed option. Users who require a Linux operating system can purchase the dc5000 with either Mandrake Linux 9.2 or SuSE Linux Personal 9.2 on CDs, but not pre-installed.
Connections
-
HP equips the dc5000 with a basic complement of ports. On its front panel, it features microphone and headphone inputs, as well as two USB 2.0 ports. Its rear features four USB ports, a serial port, parallel port, VGA port, PS/2 connectors for keyboard and mouse, more audio ports and an RJ-45 port for its built-in Gigabit Ethernet networking system. The system also has three low-profile PCI slots inside.
Drives
-
With three drive bays, the dc5000 can support an internal hard drive, external optical drive and additional external or internal 3.5 inch drive, such as a hard drive or media reader. HP offers a choice between 40, 80 and 160 gigabyte 7200 rpm drives, with the additional option of having two installed. HP also offers an array of optical drives, ranging from a read-only CD-ROM drive to a multi-format compatible DVD and CD burner. A number of external drive options, including zip drives and 3.5-inch floppy drives are also available.
CPU, Memory and Chipset
-
The dc5000 is built around Intel's 865GV chipset which includes an integrated Intel graphics controller. HP offers five processors--2.6 and 2.8 gigahertz Celerons with 400 megahertz front side bus speeds; 2.8 and 3.0 gigahertz hyperthreaded Pentium 4's with 800 megahertz FSB speeds; and a 2.8 gigahertz Pentium 4 with a 533 megahertz front side bus. HP also offers from 128 megabytes to 4 gigabytes of DDR SDRAM running at either 333 or 400 megahertz pre-installed in one or both of the computer's memory slots.
