Specs of a 1983 750 Virago

In its third model year since its introduction in North America, the 1983 Yamaha VX750 Virago continued a new generation of Japanese V-twin cruisers in America slotted between the smaller VX500 and the larger VX920.

Power

• Named for its 748cc V-twin two-stroke engine, the 1983 750 Virago produced a respectable 52 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 40 ft.-lbs. of torque at 5,750 rpm. The air-cooled Yamaha power plant boasted a bore of 83 mm and a 69.2 mm stroke, a dual stainless steel exhaust system, electric start and transistor controlled ignition. A five-speed transmission mated power to the wheels for a top speed of 105 mph.

Drive train

• With air-adjustable front telescoping forks providing 5.9 inches of travel and a first-of-its-kind single-shock rear suspension system, the 1983 VX750 could stop with confidence with its front disc and rear drum brakes, all attached to a pressed-steel frame. A unique element of the VX750's design was the engine's role as a stress member in the frame. The bike's rake measures 29 degrees with a 5.2 inch trail.

Measurements

• With a wet weight of 503 pounds, the nimble VX750 had a measured seat height of 26.5 inches, a 33.5-inch width and a 5.7-inch ground clearance. The fuel tank held 3.17 gallons of gas with .69 gallons of reserve space available.
