Plant Characteristics
-
Some plants fare better when they are directly sown instead of started indoors and transplanted later. This is especially true if the plant's roots are easily damaged during the transplanting process. Each seed packet label will recommend the best way to start the seeds.
Indoor Capacity and Free Time
-
If you don't have enough space indoors to house seedlings or give them ample light, then choose to sow seeds directly in the garden. Also, consider whether you'll have enough free time to harden off the transplants and put them in the garden at the right time.
Growing Time
-
If the plant requires a long time before it can be harvested, or if you'd like to plant in succession for longer harvest periods, then start seeds indoors. Transplant to the garden as soon as the soil is warm enough. The appropriate time to transplant will depend on what USDA hardiness zone your garden is in, which can be found on the plant's seed packet.
