SunSetter Awning Set Up Instructions

A SunSetter awning provides shade on your patio or deck when you want it and is retractable when you want full sun. While the awning installation process is simple enough for someone with basic carpentry skills, you do need someone to help you hold the heavy awning as you install it. The SunSetter awning comes fully assembled; you just need to attach it to the house.

Measure the length of the awning. Starting at one end of the intended placement on the house, measure nine feet up for the top of the awning and mark that location with chalk. Place a second chalk mark eight inches below the first mark for the placement of the bottom of the mounting brackets. The space between these marks must be clear of any light fixtures or other obstructions along the length of the awning. Make a second set of marks at the other end of the awning installation area. Check that the marks are level with each other. Snap a chalk line to mark both lines on the side of the house.

Measure the distance on the awning from the right end of the square bar to the inner and outer edges of the right arm clamp. Note the measurements and repeat for the left arm clamp. Mark the middle point on the chalk line and the points where the arms clamps will be.

Locate studs to hang the mounting brackets and mark their centers with chalk. Do not use any studs that align with the arm clamps of the awning. Hold the mounting bracket centered over the stud center mark and align the bottom of the bracket with the lower chalk line. Use the level to plumb the bracket vertically and mark the top and bottom holes. Remove the bracket and drill the top hole using a 1/4" drill bit. Ensure the bottom hole is plumb with the top hole and drill the bottom hole.

Use a 9/16" socket to secure the mounting brackets with lag screws provided in the installation kit. Use the flat washers under the head of the screws. Ensure each bracket aligns with the chalk lines you marked on the walls and that each bracket is plumb as you tighten the screws.

Remove the plastic cover from the SunSetter awning. Do not remove the sleeves from the arms at this time.

Separate the wand from the awning. Put the retaining nuts into the grooves on the top of the mounting brackets. Lift the awning into place on the mounting brackets. Position it so the fabric unrolls from the top of the awning, not the bottom. The awning is heavy, so be sure to have someone helping you. Line the top of the awning up with the marks you placed at nine feet on the wall. Push the retaining bolts and washers from the installation kit up through the bottom of the brackets. Secure them to the retaining nuts.

Take the plastic safety sleeves off the arms. Plug the SunSetter awning into a nearby ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet. Put batteries into the remote. Test the operation of the SunSetter by opening and closing the awning.
