Synchronizing iPod Is Grayed Out

When an iPod is synchronized to a computer, it maintains an identical copy of that person's music library on the device. Sometimes, you may want to synchronize the music library but the option to do so is not available. There are several reasons why this may be occurring, some of which can be easily resolved.
  • iPod Is Already Synchronized

    • If your iPod's music library matches that of the computer it is synchronized with, then the "Sync" button will be gray and unable to be pressed. To synchronize your iPod, make a change to the iTunes library or change a file on your iPod by rating a song or by creating an "On The Go Playlist."

    Manual File Management Is Enabled

    • Some users prefer to manually manage file synchronization with their iPods. This allows you to copy music by dragging it from your music library to your iPod, eliminating the "Sync" option. To return to automatic synchronization, uncheck the "Manually Manage Music and Videos" in the iPod's summary page.

    Second Music Library

    • An iPod cannot be synchronized to a second music library. If you have attached your iPod to another user's computer, then you will not be able to synchronize until you set it up with that computer. When plugging in your iPod,it will ask if you would like to sync with the new library. Choosing to do so will delete all data currently stored on your iPod and copy music from the new library.
