When Kentucky became a state in 1792, several cities located on major transportation routes vied for the privilege of becoming the state's capital. Stephen Frank's Ford, on the ford of the Kentucky River and on one of the buffalo trails serving as early highways, outbid the settlement of Lexington, Kentucky and Frank's Ford became Frankfort, the state's capital. Lexington has become Kentucky's second largest city and Kentucky's National Park Service describes the city as "The Athens of the West" or "Horse Capital of the World." Although Frankfort is the seat of Kentucky's government, Frankfort has no broadcast television stations located in there. Lexington, located 29 miles east of Frankfort, serves the Franklin County area with all the major affiliate broadcast stations.
