Tennessee Law Placement of No Trespassing Signs

Tennessee law states that a person is guilty of criminal trespassing when he enters another person's property without permission, disregarding clear postings or signs. Tennessee does not define what constitutes a clear posting, so property owners should ensure that any "No Trespassing" sign is apparent.
  • Visibility

    • All "No Trespassing" signs should be visible from the front of the property. Make sure the signs are in clear view by removing any trees or bushes around them. Ensure other objects like cars or storage sheds do not obstruct the signs.

    Placement

    • Place "No Trespassing" signs around the perimeter of your property. Placement intervals of approximately 200 feet ensure a sign will come to the attention of an intruder. Secure the signs to a sturdy structure, positioning them at eye level.

    Sign Characteristics

    • "No Trespassing" signs should be simple. Fluorescent or bright white backgrounds with bold black or red font are easy to read. Some may contain additional phrases like "Private Property" or "Keep Out."
