A Tile Size for the Kitchen

Now that you're designing your kitchen exactly the way you want it, you'll want to select the right tile for the space. Tile in the right size can give the kitchen exactly the look you're going for, and can make one of the most 'popular' spaces in the house especially welcoming.

Size

• The size of the kitchen should dictate the size tile you use for the space. Smaller kitchens will look more uniform with smaller tiles for wall accents or the oven backsplash. A kitchen with more space looks especially classy and modern with large tiles on the walls and backsplash areas.

Function

• It's also a good idea to use kitchen tiles on the countertops, or in the tops of the kitchen island. Tile is ideal for countertops because it is easy to clean and resistant to heat, which makes food preparation easier. The size of the counter or island should match the tile size, and choosing tiles that match the wall tile is ideal.

Considerations

• If you're using tile for decorative purposes, it's usually best to use smaller tile to create mosaic-style accents in the kitchen space. Or, you can use a large piece of tile and paint the family name or a time-honored recipe on the tile and hang it on the kitchen's main wall.
