Traditional Headboards

Traditional headboard styles come in a range of designs with a variety of embellishments. Often, though, they are made of only a couple of different materials. Wood and metal styles are the most common types of traditional headboards.
  • Metal

    • Iron and brass are the metals that are most used in traditional headboard styles. Many of the classical headboards involve ornately curved design motifs. Large, ornate finials occasionally decorate the posts.

    Wood

    • Wood is the most common traditional material used for headboards. Traditional wood designs involve intricate carvings and rich colors. Curved silhouettes and scalloped edges are some of the common design themes. The look can be matte and distressed or have a rich color and polished finish.

    Canopy

    • The canopy design invokes style and elegance. The most dramatic-looking traditional style, the canopy bed can come in either metal or wood. Large posts adorn the head and footboards to allow the draping of material around the bed.
