Trellis fences are often used as decorative pieces rather than for privacy. Strips of wood measuring 1 inch by ¾ of an inch are attached in a crosshatch pattern to larger slats of wood, creating spaces that are about 6 or 8 inches square. A trellis fence is more of a framework, since it has gaps large enough to see through. Due to the nature of a trellis fence, it provides privacy only if covered with climbing plants.

Use a trellis fence to keep children and pets inside the yard, and strangers and wildlife out. Using stylish trellis fence increases curb appeal. Outline the border of your property with standard trellis fence. Attach specially made curved trellis pieces to the top of the standard fence pieces for a whimsical aspect to the fence. The curved pieces appear as though a wave is traveling along your fence. Use heavy-duty posts at the corners of your property, and sturdy posts around the rest of the perimeter to add strength to your trellis fence.

Create an area lined with self-standing trellis fence pieces. Rather than forming a border around your property, this trellis fence provides background scenery. Install several panels of trellis fence in a straight line. Leave the trellis uncovered or plant some climbing vines in front of it. As they grow, they cover the trellis, providing a natural screen. This solution provides a backdrop for guests as they wander around your yard, or if you have an unsightly area of the yard you wish to conceal. The number of trellis panels required for this project depends upon the amount of space you want covered.

Find an area of your yard where a lush garden would be appropriate. Line the perimeter of the space with a tall trellis fence. The tallness indicates privacy, but the trellis aspect of the fence allows the garden to be seen from outside. Add a gate so that visitors can easily enter the garden. Train plants to grow up the trellis fence on all sides, but only from the inside of the area. Plant many flowers and vines in the space to make it feel lush and secretive. If you have an alcove on your house, enclosing it with a couple of trellis fence panels creates the same effect.
