Tutorial on Sharing Optimum Internet

If one of the computers in your home is connected to the Internet via an Optimum Internet service connection, you can share that connection between all other devices in one of two ways. One includes manually reconfiguring the settings of your connection in the Microsoft Network and Sharing Center, and the other involves connecting all of your computers or devices to something called a network router.
  • Network and Sharing Center

    • 1

Open the Microsoft Windows Network and Sharing Center by clicking its icon in your computer's Control Panel. An icon for the Control Panel is in your "Start" menu.

    • 2

      Click "Change Adapter Settings."

    • 3

Right-click on "Local Area Connection." Click the "Sharing" option. The "Properties" utility for your computer's local area connection will appear and the "Sharing" tab in this window will already be selected. The local area connection of your computer is the one that is utilizing your Optimum connection to connect to the Internet.

Check the "Allow" box in this window and click "OK." This will share you Optimum Internet connection with all the other devices in your home.

    Wired Router

    • 1

Obtain one Ethernet cable per computer to be connected. Ethernet cables are a cable capable of the high speed data transmission required to transfer information from a computer to the Internet.

    • 2

Connect your Optimum Internet modem to your router with an Ethernet cable. One side of the Ethernet cable goes directly into the back of the modem while the other goes into the back of the router at the input labeled "IN" or "INTERNET" (depending on your model of router).

    • 3

Connect your router's power cable to a wall outlet. This automatically turns the router on.

    • 4

Connect all of your computers to the router with Ethernet cables. Connect one end of an Ethernet cable to the Ethernet inputs on each of your computers. Each computer needs its own specific Ethernet cable. The other end of these Ethernet cables goes into the back of your router. Once connected, all computers will be able to access your Optimum Internet connection.
