Reaching any of the milestones in life -- graduating from high school, getting married, celebrating the birth of a child or celebrating a birthday or anniversary -- are noteworthy occasions to recognize. Yet when it comes to turning 90 years of age, it often becomes difficult to come up with the perfect birthday gift. However, with a little thought you can find a gift to make that day a memorable one.

    Apparel and Furnishings

    • T-shirts, ball caps, and ties that proclaim that the birthday honoree has reached 90 years of age are readily available. While many of these are serious and may even extol the virtues of being a grandparent or even a great-grandparent or still being active in a sport or hobby, many are also humorous, suggesting the person is "over the hill" or listing a copyright date that corresponds to the year of birth. Boxers and briefs listing the birth year can also be found as can personalized totes and throws proclaiming the age of the birthday celebrant.

    Fun Gifts

    • Today's 90-year-olds are more active than ever before. If your nonagenarian has a particular hobby or interest, a gift subscription to a magazine that specializes in it could be the perfect gift. Many of today's magazines come in large print editions or even in audio format so that even those with sight limitations can enjoy them. A family photo or just one of the grandkids would no doubt be a welcome gift as would a photo album or DVD of favorite family photos. A collection of favorite songs through the years would conjure up memories of the past, and gifts of chocolates, fine wines and other edibles are usually appreciated. If he or she enjoys movies or has a favorite actor or actress, DVDs or a subscription to a movie rental service could be a hit. A dinner with friends could also be special.

    Unique Gifts

    • If you're looking for something on the unique side, try a newspaper or at least the front page from the day he or she was born. A gift to a favorite charity in the celebrant's name or setting aside time to perform chores for the celebrant may be appreciated. Inviting him or her to a special event such as a concert or theater presentation may be perfect. You might even want to consider a gift of a hot air balloon ride or having a star named after the celebrant for that totally unique present.
