Unique Gifts for New Mothers

  • Breast Pump

If your new mom plans on breastfeeding, a pump is the perfect gift. The American Academy of Pediatrics, as well as a number of leading professional organizations, including the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine and the World Health Organization, recommend that a new mom breastfeed her baby for the first six months of the baby's life, unless, of course, there's a medical reason not to. Pumps vary in price and include either small, personal-use automatic pumps that are discreet for the working mommy, or the larger, hospital-grade pumps. To add to this gift, plan for a lactation consultant to come out and demonstrate how to correctly use the pump.

    Diaper Service

    • If your new mom is environmentally friendly, a gift certificate to a diaper service is practical. Being a new mom includes midnight feedings, constant bathing and endless diaper changes. A diaper service will be a significant help if your new mom plans on using environmentally-sound cloth diapers. This service eases the headache of constant diaper cleaning by picking up your baby's soiled diapers and replacing them with a clean set. This gift will give mommy some much needed rest time while being environmentally conscious.

    Personal Chef

    • If you have small children, you know that a personal chef is a great gift for a new mom. It's difficult to find time to think, let alone to prepare a decent meal for the rest of the family members. A personal chef is there to prepare meals to your specifications or can offer suggestions on nutrition. With this type of gift, there are a few options. You can have the personal chef come out once or twice a week to prepare a fresh meal for the family, or you can have the chef prepare two-weeks' worth of meals in advance and place them in the freezer. All mom has to do is thaw out and serve.

    Babysitting Services

    • Babysitting services are practical and will definitely be appreciated by new mothers. Many local agencies provide this type of service, but if it's a little out of your price range and your new mom feels uncomfortable with using a service for her newborn, consider offering the service yourself. A nice idea is to prepare personalized homemade coupons to be redeemed by the new mom. For instance, one of the coupons could read, "Babysitter for two hours while mommy runs errands." The new mommy will love this idea because it is creative and personalized to fit her needs and schedule.
