UV Radiation Ppe Description

Ultraviolet radiation is used in labs and hospitals in transilluminators, germicidal lamps, black lights and UV curing lamps. Exposure to UV radiation can cause skin cancer, cataracts, melanoma and erythema. Since UV radiation has no immediate symptoms, wearing personal protective equipment, or PPE, is essential.
  • Eye Protection

    • Protect your eyes and face with a UV-certified, polycarbonate face shield. Do not look directly at UV light, if possible.

    Skin Protection

    • Wear a buttoned lab coat, long pants, long sleeves, closed-toe shoes and disposable nitrile gloves. Make sure there is no exposed skin between your sleeves and gloves, since any exposed skin will likely burn.

    Medications

    • Some medications increase photosensitivity, which also increases a person's susceptibility to UV radiation. If people working with UV radiation are on medication, make sure the medication does not increase photosensitivity.

    Labels

    • All UV-emitting devices or areas should be clearly labeled with warning signs. Do not allow untrained personnel into areas with UV devices.
