Varieties of Japanese Apple

  In Japan, consumers prefer the crispy texture and sweetness of its most famous variation, the Fuji apple. The country has many mutations of the Fuji apple as well as several local apple varieties. This is important because Japan does not import many apples. Very few of Japan's native apple variations have plant patents in the United States.

Fuji

• The orginal Fuji apple is a cross between the red delicious and the Ralls Genet. It was introduced in the United States in 1962. Vegetables, Herbs and Fruit authors, Matthew Biggs, Jekka McVicar and Bob Flowerdew say the variety is a firm American favorite because of its honeyed sweetness and crisp white flesh.

Yataka

• The Yataka apple was mutated from the Fuji apple in 1989. It has a striped pattern.

Heisei Fuji

• This variaty is also known as the Beni Shogun. It is a mutation of the Yataka. It is dark red in color with a sold pattern.

Cooper

• The Cooper apple was created in 1992. It is a mutation of the Redsport, Type 2, It is colored brilliant red and has a striped pattern.

Fukuda

• The Fukuda apple was created in 1995. It is another mutation of the Fuji apple. It is a striped red apple.

Lynd

• The Lynd apple was created in1996. It is also a mutation of the Fuji apple. The Lynd apple is red with a striped pattern

Teague

• The Teague apple is solid yellow. It was created in 2001 and is a mutation of the Irene apple.

Van Leuven

• The Van Leuven apple was created in 1996. It is pink colored and has a blush pattern with a subtle stripes.

Yahagi

• The Yahagi apple is mutation of the Yataka apple. It has a dark red color.

Auvil

• The Auvil apple is a bright red apple with a blush pattern. It was created in 1997.
