In 1907, Penta made its first one-cylinder, 3-horsepower compression ignition engine and then continued to produce engines under the company name of AB Pentaverken. In 1935, Penta became a subsidiary of Volvo. Today, Volvo Penta produces small internal combustion engines for marine and industrial use. The Volvo Penta D1-20 is an 18-horsepower inboard marine engine.
Engine Specifications
-
The Volvo Penta D1-20 is a .76 L, three-cylinder, diesel engine. The cylinder block and cylinder head of this engine are both made from high-grade cast iron. The engine's pistons are made from high-silicon aluminum, which makes them extremely durable. The fuel system of the D1-20 is a cam-driven in-line injection pump. The engine's exhaust manifold is cooled with freshwater, while the exhaust elbows are cooled with seawater. The engine operates between 2,800 and 3,600 rpm. The bore cylinder has a diameter of 2.64 inches, while the stroke piston has a length of 2.83 inches. The engine's peak power is 18 horsepower.
Cooling and Electrical Specifications
-
The freshwater cooling system on the D1-20 is thermostatically cooled. This engine also comes equipped with a tubular heat exchanger, which features an integral expansion tank. The freshwater coolant system is prepared for hot water outlet fittings. For the seawater cooling system, this engine features a easily accessible water pump and impeller. The electrical system on the D1-20 is 12 volts and is corrosion protected. The alternator is marine ready and has 14 volts and 115 amps. A charging regulator is also installed to help compensate for an unexpected drop in voltage. The motor also features an electronic start-and-stop feature.
Other Specifications
-
The D1-20 has three transmission options. All three of the transmission options are housed in a die-cast aluminum alloy and have a mechanical multiple-disc clutch shift. The first transmission option has a reverse gear with an 8-degree down-angle output. The second has a reverse gear with straight output, and the third has a reverse gear and sail drive. The dry weight of D1-20 with the first two transmission options is 289 lbs. With the third transmission option, the dry weight of the D1-20 is 317 lbs.
