West Virginia Early Learning Standards

A child's early learning experiences can have a powerful impact on his overall development. Because of this, the state of West Virginia has established a framework of early learning standards that help to establish guidelines for what young children should learn.

Social and Emotional

• A young child's mastery of concepts related to social and emotional development is vital to later success in life, as "Children grow and learn within the context of positive social relationships," according to the Department of Health and Human Resources. Thus, state-created standards for social and emotional development include an understanding of one's family and the broader community, as well as the development of social relationships and a desire to learn.

Language and Literacy

• The development of language and literacy skills can provide a solid base for academic success. Early learning standards in West Virginia are related to speaking, listening, and reading, such as developing interpersonal skills and an appreciation for literature.

Physical Health and Development

• Early learning standards in the area of physical health and development are concerned with building fine and gross motor skills. In addition, safety knowledge and positive health habits, such as hand washing and good nutrition, are also covered.

Science, Mathematics and the Arts

• These standard areas deal with academic expectations for young children. As such, they are concerned with concepts such as the development of creativity and number recognition, as well as daily opportunities to, "...explore various environments local to the community, as well as introducing new ideas about other environments, " according to the Department of Health and Human Resources.
