What Are the Differences Between Canon Rebel XSi & Canon Rebel T1i?

    • Plenty of choices exist for the beginner photographer when choosing a digital single lens reflex (SLR) camera. Among the choices is the Canon entry-level line of Rebel cameras. Two of the more popular models in the Rebel line as of November 2010 are the Canon Rebel XSi and the Canon Rebel T1i. Distinct differences, however, exist between the two cameras.

    Image Quality

    • The Canon Rebel XSi features fewer megapixels than the Canon Rebel T1i. The T1i has a 15.1-megapixel (MP) complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) sensor, while the XSi has a 12.2 MP CMOS sensor. Those who want to print large images, such as posters, may benefit from more megapixels because such cameras produce more detailed photos, according to Digital Photography School. The T1i also has a DIGIC 4 image processor, and the XSi has the DIGIC III.

    Speed

    • The XSi has slightly faster continuous shooting speed than the T1i, 3.5 frames per second for the XSi versus 3.4 frames per second for the T1i. Speed is essential when capturing photographs of people, animals or subjects that move constantly.

    ISO Ranges

    • The T1i can shoot at higher ISO speed ranges than the XSi. Basic ISO zones for the Canon XSi range from 100 to 800. Basic ISO zones for the Canon T1i range from 100 to 3,200. In creative zones, the XSi expands the ISO range to 100 to 1,600. The T1i can expand up to an ISO of 12,800. Higher ISO values are advantageous for those who take photos in areas that aren't lighted well.

    Video

    • Another difference between the T1i and XSi is video capability. You can shoot full high definition (HD) and standard definition (SD) videos with the Canon T1i. The T1i also has HDMI output. The XSi doesn't have the option to capture video.

    Weight

    • The Canon XSi weighs a little less than the T1i. The Canon XSi (body only) weighs 16.8 oz. The Canon T1i weighs 16.9 oz. The dimensions of the XSi and T1i are the same.

    Battery Life

    • Battery life for the Canon XSi is rated to be longer than for the T1i. At a temperature of 73 degrees F, the XSi can take approximately 600 shots without the flash. The T1i, under the same conditions, can take approximately 500 shots.

    Price

    • As of November 2010, the Canon EOS Rebel XSi kit that includes the 18-55 mm lens retails for $649.99. The Canon EOS Rebel T1i with the 18-55 mm lens retails for $799.99. Each camera is available through retailers such as Best Buy, Sam's Club, Wal-Mart, Amazon.com and Adorama.
