What Are the Requirements to Make Cliffs in "Age of the Empires"?

    • Cliffs and other features in "Age of Empires" are made through the game's map and scenario editor. Creating cliffs is not a requirement, but they do give players a new place to battle on. The map editor is accessible from the main menu of the game.

    Accessing the Map Editor

    • At the title screen select "More" then "Editor."

    Cliff Tool

    • The Cliff Tool is located in the toolbar at the top of the screen. It looks like a green plateau and is sandwiched between the river and forest buttons. Click on it for a list of cliff types to choose from. Alter the default height of the cliff with the slider that appears on the left side of the window. "Paint" the cliffs onto the map to your liking. Edit cliffs you have already placed with the Cliff Edit button. The button looks the same as the Cliff Tool but has a red line along the cliff.

    Making Cliffs Accessible

    • Merely making cliffs without changing the elevation of the area around it would only create inaccessible plateaus. Click the Cliff Editor button and you will see triangles around the cliff, right click them and the cliff will disappear creating a walkable path. This is the simplest method. Other roundabout ways include using the river tool to paint a river on the cliff and then painting over that with the land tool.

    Realistic Looking Cliffs

    • As cliffs in the real world are never identical, using only one type of cliff for your map will give it a bland and boring look. Use similar looking cliffs such as Amazon and Bayou together. Different combinations will give you different effects and some will look better than others.

    Repairing "Damaged" Cliffs

    • When you place a building next to a cliff it will change the cliff into a piece of flat land for units to walk across. To fix this issue click the Cliff Tool again and left-click the flat area. This will turn the land back into a cliff.
