What Is a Bone Crusher?

Dengue fever is an infectious disease that spreads via mosquitoes and surfaces in tropical climates. Amongst its symptoms is a severe pain in the joints, which is why dengue is colloquially known as "the bone-crusher disease."
  • Symptoms

    • "Bone-crushing" joint pain is only one of dengue fever's symptoms. People infected with the disease will experience nausea, fever, headache and rashes on the chest and limbs. In severe cases, dengue fever can damage the blood and lymph vessels, and even cause fatal shock.

    Prevention

    • While dengue fever is most common in tropical regions, it can surface in any region with a high mosquito population, and is highly infectious. Repelling mosquitoes is the best way to prevent a dengue fever outbreak.

    Treatment

    • While there is no specific cure for dengue fever, it is rarely fatal if treated early. Common methods of treating regular fevers, such as pain relievers, greater liquid intake, bed rest are usually effective, but a doctor should be consulted if vomiting, abdominal pain or other severe symptoms develop.
